Win a Free European River Cruise

Waterways of Holland & Belgium

by Vantage Program Managers
Sailing along the Dutch and Belgian waterways usually marks the beginning of the rivercruise season in Europe. A variety of cities and smaller towns are visited and we touch upon several typical themes likes bulbs, flowers, watermanagement. There is also the possibility to meet the dutch: this takes place in the city of Hoorn. Hoorn was a seat of the Dutch East India Company, which made the city wealthy. It shows, Hoorn has still lots of buildings dating from that time, the 17th century or Golden Age, and many of these buildings are monuments.

The hosted dinner doesn't take place with families at home, but in historic locations. The photo shows some of the Vantage guests enjoying a typical dutch evening meal in the 'Oosterkerk' in Hoorn. Oosterkerk can be translated as 'East Church'. The oldest part of this church dates to the year 1519. It is located close to the port, and used to be a typical church for seamen and fishermen.

Every table has a hostess or host from the area, eager to chat with our passengers about live in the area of Hoorn or any other subject that may come up! After this successful event, everybody walked the short distance back to the port where the MS River Splendor was docked. Some passengers got home a little later, making a bit of a detour to reach the ship in order to see a bit more of Hoorn.
Best regards,

Veere, Zeeland

Tuesday, April 2, 2013
by Vantage Program Managers
Mr. and Mrs. Jon and Sheila Streltzer from Honolulu, Hawai, felt like kids in a candy store when they visited “Oma’s snoepwinkel”, the old-fashioned sweets shop in the small town of Veere, The Netherlands.

Their  Vantage river cruise ship, the brand new ms River Splendor, was docked in this cute little town, well known for its wool trade with Scotland in the 16th century.

Veere is situated in the Southwestern province of Zeeland, where in 1953 a disastrous flood took place. It took the lives of 1836 people, thousands of cattle, and destroyed thousands of homes, as well as other buildings. Afterwards, the so-called “Delta Works” project was designed to protect the land of Zeeland and prevent a recurrence of the 1953 flood disaster. The passengers of the River Splendor visited the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier, part of the Delta Works, on a guided tour and were very impressed by this engineering feat….

Discoveries Contest Winner!

Monday, June 18, 2012
by L. Nelson

Congratulations to Rosanne Vogen for winning our Discoveries Contest! We enjoyed reading all of your responses to the question: 'What has been your greatest discovery while traveling?" Roseanne won a $500 e-gift card to The North Face!

See Rosanne's entry below.

As a senior citizen, mother of two and grandmother of five, I have been blessed with enough years to have had almost countless experiences. Travelling has been among the greatest! In my journeys to countries like China, Egypt and Israel, I've discovered that Geography truly comes to life through travel and in spite of customs and life styles, people are very much alike the world over!

As a student, Geography was not one of my favorite subjects. Back in the '50s, travel was mainly done by the wealthy which excluded my family. My world was the home and city in which I lived. All those countries on the map seemed so unimportant. Then my life changed when I fortunately met and married a man who wanted to travel. He has literally shown me the world! Visits to London, Paris, Venice and Rome have brought Europe to life. I have flown over the Artic Circle and the Gobi Desert and can locate them on a map. I have learned with enthusiasm that Egypt is a country in northern Africa and that the Nile River flows North! Finally, I have experienced the warmth of the people in the tiny country of Israel and learned of their life of constant, impending danger.

Traveling our amazing world is a living education and an eye-opening experience. But I have found that people and their basic needs and emotions are much the same worldwide. Almost everyone cherishes family, they socialize and dine together and seek a safe, comfortable place to rest and rejuvenate. Facial features, housing accommodations and menu items may vary but all human beings share so many similarities. I have been blessed to witness this first hand through the beauty of travel and hope that my education continues for many years!

Travel Recommendation: Angkor Wat & the Mekong: A River Cruise in the Heart of Indochina

Monday, April 30, 2012
by Vantage Employee's Travel

Vantage Deluxe World Travel knows that it's important for our employees to experience our wonderful trips firsthand- that's why all employees are strongly encouraged to take a Familiarization (FAM) trip. These trips are intended to familiarize associates with the great products Vantage offers. They are an invaluable opportunity to live our customers' experience and to travel to exciting and varied destinations! Below Vantage employee, Christel Shea, describes her time in Vietnam and Cambodia!

It’s been a few weeks since I returned from my trip to Vietnam and Cambodia on Vantage’s Mekong River cruise, and people are still asking me about the journey and what I liked best.
Certainly the tropical weather is a nice change from March in New England! And the food is fantastic – fresh and flavorful fish and exotic fruits and vegetables for lunch and dinner, with just enough western food options to not feel overwhelmed by curries and spices. The iconic architecture, including the pagodas of Phnom Penh, the temples of Angkor Wat and the colonial influences throughout Saigon, made me feel like I was truly in another place and time.

A benefit of any cruise is that you get to see so much while being settled, without packing and feeling on the move all the time. The Pandaw ship “fit” with the area—dark woods, a lot of open spaces to sit and relax and just take in the scenery, and plenty of a/c in our cabins and the lounge when you needed it. The staff was excellent, friendly and just solicitous enough.

The most enlightening part of the experience was our interaction with people in this region. Our guides, the ship’s crew and the local residents we met along the way were warm and welcoming. They taught us about their religions and culture, which are deep and complex, and they shared their personal stories and points of view about the area’s history – also deep and complex. As my friend put it, people there have a “move forward mentality,” and their grace, dignity and resilience are driving tourism and economic growth to the area.

We often bundle “Southeast Asia” together. It’s not until one is there talking to people and seeing villages and cities first-hand that you really realize how unique each country is. Like the US, Canada and Mexico, these countries are “same-same, but different.” And after spending some time there, you’ll come home same-same but different, too.

Vantage Travel Recommendation- Greece: Antiquity to Byzantium

Friday, April 27, 2012
by Vantage Employee's Travel

Vantage Deluxe World Travel knows that it's important for our employees to experience our wonderful trips firsthand- that's why all employees are strongly encouraged to take a Familiarization (FAM) trip. These trips are intended to familiarize associates with the great products Vantage offers. They are an invaluable opportunity to live our customers' experience and to travel to exciting and varied destinations! Below Vantage employee, Nibedita Parhi, describes her time in Greece!

Greece: Antiquity to Byzantium

This was our (my husband & I) first FAM (familiarization trip) and  trip outside of USA (except visiting family in India) and I must say it was a great experience visiting Greece. We had the opportunity to go on a small yacht and felt very private with a small group of co-passengers and highly professional crew.

We are used to the long flights and it was easy getting to Athens via Frankfurt. Upon arrival our ride and guide were ready to make our visit a remembrance. For me it’s the guide that made all the difference and throughout the visit we had one 24/7. Our ride from the airport to the hotel was not only a sightseeing tour but also a learning session as the guide took time to explain all the landmarks and history associated with them. Finally the hotel, one of top 3 in Athens, was a great place to land after a long flight. Our rooms were on the top floors giving us a spectacular view of Athens including the Acropolis & the Temple of Zeus.

In the evening we walked to PLAKA (ancient Greek market place for tourists) and came across several ancient excavations on the sides of the road on our way to PLAKA. Trees full of oranges are everywhere, people are friendly and we felt safe walking around the PLAKA. It’s full of gift shops & restaurants and don't forget to try the delicious Gyro (local food) and Ouzo (local drink) in PLAKA.

The next day we visited the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, Temple of Zeus and the first stadium for modern Olympics. The stadium was full of school children in a program to support the Olympics in London. Now we are part of it too. We headed for our yacht around 4:00 PM and spent the next 7 days learning about a lot about ancient Greece, mythology, architecture, and art as we had lectures every day, visiting many islands and sailing around the “Peloponnese”.

The crew on board welcomed us with orange juice and took care of us during our stay with the sole objective to make us feel at ease and enjoy our time. The captain made us go thru a safety drill and before we knew we were on our way to explore Greece. We had many choices for breakfast, a buffet lunch and 5 course dinners, with wine and spirits from the bar. We both agree that the  food was excellent on board.

We cruised around the Peloponnese and visited many ancient places of Greece such as Egina – the Island of Pistachios, temple of Aesculapius, the wonderful Amphitheater – dating to the 4th century B.C. and arranged in 55 semi-circular rows, remains the great masterwork of Polykleitos the Younger where audiences of up to an estimated 14,000 have long been able to hear actors and musicians “unamplified” from even the back row of the architectural masterpiece, Napfio – the Venetian fortress from the 17th century, Mycenae – the site identified with Agamemnon and the Iliad & Agamemnon's tomb with a side treasure chamber & the Lion’s Gate to the ruins of the Agamemnon’s fort, Monemvassia – no streets but walkways broken by steps that ascend the steep hill where we visited a medieval Greek Orthodox church with great carvings, Olympia – where the first Olympic games were played in ancient Greece and the Olympic torch is still lit there for modern Olympics, Patras, The Corinth Canal – connects the Gulf of Corinth with

the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea and Delfi – the ancient spiritual temples of Greece the home of “Oracle” best site with amazing views & the Olive trees. Most every site has a Museum with the collectibles from the excavations and our guide took the time to explain it all including a lecture on the boat the previous day to visiting the sites. We had a Captains dinner on the boat and a night of Greek dance where we performed with the crew after a quick lesson.

Upon return to Athens, we went to PLAKA to wrap up shopping for family and friends and that afternoon we visited cape Sounion – the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon. It takes about 2 hours and as always, the guide kept us busy during our drive to the site.

On our departure day we were picked up by our driver and the guide who helped us at the airport and the security gates, wishing us a happy  & safe return flight to HOME. This was a great trip - one we love sharing with family and friends

Vantage Travel Recommendation: Greece: Antiquity to Byzantium

Monday, April 23, 2012
by Vantage Employee's Travel

Vantage Deluxe World Travel knows that it's important for our employees to experience our wonderful trips firsthand- that's why all employees are strongly encouraged to take a Familiarization (FAM) trip. These trips are intended to familiarize associates with the great products Vantage offers. They are an invaluable opportunity to live our customers' experience and to travel to exciting and varied destinations! Below Vantage employee, Lynn Noll, describes her time in Greece!

Greece: Antiquity to Byzantium

This was my first FAM. It was great. My husband and I both loved Greece, and the overall quality of the experience was superb. It was packed with activities, and Greece in April had excellent weather for sight seeing. Greek Orthodox Easter added color.

Here is a log of what we did.

Start: Flight on Lufthansa. Flights are always long, but being with the group helped make the time pass faster. Enjoyed a nice German beer on the flight and supper on the flight.

Arrived in Athens. Met at airport by efficient manager from Britain (married to a Greek and living in Athens) who narrated tour as we rode back from the airport. The Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus tells us we are in really in Greece!

Hotel proved excellent, with an attentive staff and efficient check-in. Great view of the Acropolis.  Beds and lighting were top quality.  There is a shuttle to the Plaka.

A drink and a shower left me feeling much more alive, and I headed for the Plaka (market place) with the group for a bit of shopping. By the subway stop we passed, we found an Athenian feature:  whenever a hole is dug, it reveals new antiquities, so the sites are covered with glass and preserved.  There was such a site by the subway stop on our way to the Plaka.

Friday: After breakfast, a new guide met us. She was very knowledgeable. We passed the stadium for the first modern Olympics as it was filling up with school children from all over Greece. Then we explored the Acropolis and the Acropolis museum.  The Acropolis Museum, a new museum, was built over part of the old Athenian market place, so most of the floors are glass so you can see the ancient store and house foundations.  We could see the foundations continuing under areas without glass floors; they looked like they ran on forever.

We enjoy gyros and drinks at a restaurant in the Plaka before heading for the ship. The food is delicious.

The ship’s staff greeted us with orange juice. My husband and I arrange our luggage under the beds, and plug in my computer under the TV to charge.  (We brought an adaptor.) We hang a couple of outfits in the closet, but don’t spend much time unpacking; we head up to the lounge immediately to watch the mainland and islands roll by.

The bar and lounge proved very inviting, whether inside or out. I enjoy a cold beer. Today is quite warm: about 75. After I finish my beer, I go up to the roof deck, where the movement of the ship creates a steady breeze.  I get a bit of a sunburn; I should have remembered sunblock! I meet some of my fellow passengers, who are from California and the UK.

We headed for an unscheduled stop at nearby Egina, the Island of Pistachios, where Greeks vacation, and reached it before dinner. The island was delightful, with a pleasure boat harbor and a pretty harbor side church. (There is an archeological site at one side, but we don’t visit it.) Little dwellings along the alleys had pretty patio gardens with bright flowers; we stopped at an inviting mom and pop store. The proprietors smile shyly and give each of us a red Easter egg; we buy pistachios and chocolate. Some of us go swimming. Later, the guide led an evening tour to watch the full moon rise.

Saturday: The ship anchored off shore at our first scheduled stop, and we took the ship’s boat to the town: Palea Epidavro. From there, we visited the temple of Aesculapius,  and the wonderful Theater, very well preserved and restored, and still used for special productions. We had it mostly to ourselves. One of the guests entertained us with an aria to demonstrate the acoustics. Eugenia (our guide) proved informative and enthusiastic. Views from the theater were spectacular, and wild flowers were everywhere (as at every stop.)  I take a picture of red poppies framed against ancient marble columns. Afterwards, we had some free time in town, and then returned to the ship, where we enjoyed a bit of swimming. The Aegean proved chilly but swimmable, like the Cape in June, and very clear.

We made an unscheduled stop at Poros that evening. We enjoyed a climb through the back alleys (which in Poros are stairs and walkways) to the watch tower; we also visited an old chapel.

Sunday: Napfio. That afternoon we took a bus to the Venetian fortress (they call it a castle but I think cannon holes make it a fortress—it is from the 17th century) at the top of the hill. Views were spectacular.   In the 17th century, people ascended by the ‘999 steps’, which zigzag back and forth up the hill;  the next day, my husband and I climb them for the experience.  There is a long sea walk by the ocean; we walk along it for about a mile, and then turn back, as it seems to go on forever.

Monday: Weather was a bit rainy and nippy for the visit to Mycenae, the site identified with Agamemnon and the Iliad. Agamemnon's tomb is a marvelous old beehive, with a side treasure chamber (empty now).   The Lion’s Gate greets us as we enter the ruins of the walled town. Access is good: one guest was able to explore it in a wheelchair. When we first arrive, there are few other visitors, but the crowds gather while we are exploring, and the rain seems more serious.  We retreat to the museum, and then return to town. As the ship is docked at Nafplio, we could wander off at will; this is when Brad and I climb the stairs. We explore a second fortress, lower down, but decide not to take the little taxi boat to the third. We shop a little in town.

On the ship that evening, the crew demonstrated Greek and Arabic dancing. The guests (very clumsy) join in, and everyone gets very silly. Afterwards, some guests leave to enjoy the bars along the waterfront (they close around 5 a.m.).

Tuesday: Scheduled stop in medieval Monemvassia. It barely had streets at all, but rather walkways broken by steps that ascend the steep hill; the garbage truck is a weird little tractor with tank treads.  We visited a very fine medieval Greek Orthodox church with great carvings and a twelfth century icon, and then climbed to an old closed church on the peak to enjoy the view. (Monemvassia has a huge number of churches—I saw two different totals—one for 27 and one for 45.) I take a picture of the overlapping orange tile roofs making patterns down the hill.

No clubbing that evening—we travel overnight.  We have a brief port slot at which we will disembark very early, because the captain has heard there will be three big cruise ships arriving the same day. We want to reach Olympia while we can still have it mostly to ourselves.   While we explore by bus, the captain will continue on, and we will rejoin him in Patras.

Wednesday: We get on our bus by 7:30 a.m., which didn’t keep me from enjoying breakfast since I arranged a early wake up call. The port lacked charm, but we didn’t spend very long there.  We did watch one of the big ships arrive; the captain docked it very carefully; it dwarves our yacht. Nicholas (head of the serving staff) remembers working on one of those; he says it meant waiting in lines for everything. Just because it has docked does not mean their first wave of tourists can compete with us; we get to Olympia way before anyone from that ship.

Olympia has flowering trees all over the site among the ancient columns. This site is a lot flatter than the mountainous areas we have been exploring, and it is easy to walk around. We go mad taking pictures. Most impressive is a fallen column from the temple of Zeus; you can see how big it was and how the pieces fitted together.  The stadium is grass covered; we pretend to run foot races there.

After the site, we stopped for a wine and olive oil tasting, and then ate a very fine lunch at a small restaurant. They make their own red wine; Brad buys a carafe for our table.

That evening, we rejoined the ship in Patras, and can see the Peloponnesus on one side and the mainland on the other for the rest of the trip.

Thursday: we visited Delfi (best site yet, with absolutely amazing views from the bus down the valley to Itea and the sea, and great ruins, very well preserved). Eugenia gave a great tour, and then we explored on our own. Brad and I climbed up to the stadium at the top; we don’t go as far as the top of the mountain because time is getting short. We can see three or four snow covered peaks; people do ski on these slopes. But the weather is a comfortable 65 degrees.

After that we rejoined the ship for lunch, and then headed back to Marina Zea. We spend the night in the port, and do our repacking. We say good-bye to Eugenia, who is leaving a bit early. It seems sad that the cruise is at an end.

Friday:  Good Friday. Brad and I go off on our own. We walk through the public parks up to the highest point in Athens (Lycabettus Hill); there is a cable car, but you can walk from little park to little park almost all the way. Then we decide to skip the planned tour, and head over to the Archeological museum to view the Mycenean gold (the originals) and the Minoan frescos. On the way back, we cut through the markets where the Athenians are buying Easter supplies (whole skinned lambs and goats on display, as well as bins of beans and lentils.) The rest of the group heads up the coast with a Greek guide. Later, we rejoin the group for a drink. Afterwards, several people dress up a little so they can visit a local church to see Christ brought out; I am tempted but don’t want to change.

Saturday: Long flight back. The little TV’s on the back of the seats let us choose fairly recent movies; I watch Sherlock Homes 2, and Brad watches that and the new Mission Impossible.

Angkor Wat & the Mekong: A River Cruise in the Heart of Indochina

Tuesday, April 10, 2012
by Vantage Employee's Travel

Angkor Wat & the Mekong: A River Cruise in the Heart of Indochina, was truly an unforgettable experience and so much more than I could have dreamed of. From the bustling cities of Vietnam to the unique countryside of Cambodia, we experienced the many contrasts of this

incredible region. It was as if we stepped back in time as we explored ancient temple ruins, pulled up to river villages, and discovered the rich cultures of the two countries.

The highlight for me was the full day visit to Angkor Wat Temple complex, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. We arrived around 8:00 in the morning and began at the south gate of Angkor Thom, the entrance to the Bayon temple-my favorite temple at the Angkor complex. Surrounded by dense jungle, with hundreds of large stone faces adorning the different towers, and beautiful bas-reliefs, it really was an enchanting place. From the beginning of the trip my Mom really wanted to see an elephant, so we decided to take an elephant ride around Angkor Thom and the Boyon temple. It was an amazing way to see the entire temple exterior and I am so happy we decided to do it!

As we continued our journey along the Mekong River, we met many local people, who were so spirited and full life even though they had very little. Many of the children would come up to us and practice their English or sing a song.  It was so interesting to learn about their lives and really added to the entire experience.
I am very grateful to have had this wonderful opportunity! I would recommend this trip to anyone who has a taste for the exotic and wants to journey off the beaten path and explore the diverse land of Southeast Asia.

ms River Discovery II's Maiden Voyage!

Monday, March 26, 2012
by L. Nelson

Tara Fanning, Vice President of Product Planning for European Rivers at Vantage Travel, is on board the Inaugural Maiden Voyage of our newest European River cruise ship, the ms River Discovery II. Below she describes her experience aboard our newest ship!

March 23, 2012

La Strada was playing in the lounge as our customers entered the Latitude 52 Lounge where they were greeted by Hank and Tricia Lewis. The women were given a rose and each customer had their photo taken with COO, Bret Gordon, and myself.  Guests were given a glass of champagne to enjoy while listening to the live music.

The weather in Amsterdam is 64 – perfect for the Christening Ceremonies on the Solaris Deck – and I was the master of ceremonies! The ceremony included handing the keys of the ship to the Captain, and the bell christening which was done by Tricia. Passengers enjoyed champagne and hors d’oeuvres on deck.

The ship is amazing!  WIFI is good – online now! The rooms are incredibly spacious and allow one to fit their luggage below their beds. The iPhone docking station in the room is a great touch (and a lifesaver if you forgot your charger). The customers really love it!

I can’t wait until people see the Captain’s Lounge with its retractable roof!  The Captain’s Lounge offers great outdoor seating, as does the Solaris deck – and luckily we are able to use them both in this gorgeous spring weather!

March 24, 2012

Today is another great day in Amsterdam. The weather is absolutely gorgeous. We did a city tour of Amsterdam followed by a guided tour (with our headsets) of the Rijksmuseum. It's the only place to see Rembrandt's Night Watch.

We returned to the ship for lunch on board. I ate al fresco in the Captain's Club. The food has been wonderful - especially the soups!  Today's soup was a traditional Dutch mustard soup

(zanssemosterdsoep). You have to try the soups!! I have had three of them so far - can't decide which one was the best

We are sailing to Schoonhoven now where we will be overnight. A lecturer came on board and gave a lecture on Dutch Waterways and Canals. Vantage Program Managers will give a Dutch language lesson a bit later.

Fun facts:

- There are more bicycles in Amsterdam than people!  1,000,000 vs 700,000

- Schipol airport is 4 meters BELOW sea level
Captain's Welcome Party is tonight - looking forward to another great evening on board.

March 25, 2012

The weather continues to be UNBELIEVABLE!  We did our walking tour of Schoonhoven  - very nice town.  Some of the guests went to church.  Back on board we had an afternoon sail to Kinderdijk – UNESCO Site with 19 windmills!  We had a lecture on the windmills before disembarking to see the windmills and the pump house.  It was interesting to see how the “millers” lived in those quarters.

March 26, 2012

Today was a tour of Ghent, which is not offered on the regular Holland & Belgium tour but is offered from Brussels extension.  Another great day for weather – the walking tour showed us the town and its highlights. Guests could return to the ship for lunch or stay – which is what I did and had the mussels and fries. Later, guests were taken back for free time in the city center.  The evening was a highlight – we had dinner ashore with entertainment – the venue was a former monastery and the stained glass window illuminated the place when we arrived. The food was great – I had the chicken stew!

March 27, 2012

We took a motorcoach from the ship to Bruges where we began our tour with a canal ride of this medieval city in open-air boats. Our driver enjoyed pointing out some of the highlights of the city as we drifted by. Again we have lucked out with sunny days! Our canal ride was followed by a walking tour with local guides.

The group had the ability to do the regular tour or walk a bit more on an “active walking tour”  - all tours included our headsets. The tour ended with free time in the afternoon in Bruges.  We were each provided 15 euro for lunch on our own – I opted for the frittes (fries) with tartar sauce! There were many toppings to choose from- be adventurous! During my free time, I walked along the streets, and bought some Belgian chocolates (that were delicious).  I also found chocolates filled with onions, wasabi, and tomatoes! I bought them and I will let you know how are they are! Of course there is the beer. There are so many different beers here. Although I'm not a big beer drinker, the Raspberry flavored beer is quite good. All this talk of food... I should be hitting the fitness room or joining the ladies who walk the track. =)

I'm back on board now as we have set sail for Antwerp. We are scheduled to arrive late this evening. It is almost time for the port talk followed by dinner and entertainment in the lounge.

Shackleton's Antarctica: Small Ship Cruise

Thursday, January 26, 2012
by Vantage Travel

"Men wanted: For hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success."

 -Sir Ernest Shackleton

Sir Ernest Shackleton VantageTravel.com Antarctica 2012I still vividly remember reading the book Endurance for the first time years ago, and being so impacted by the story, the ordeal of the crew, the leadership under duress...and of course the imagery in my mind of the White Continent itself.  VantageTravel.com is fortunate enough to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity for our travelers to see what the crew of Endurance saw nearly 100 years ago.

Bow of ms Fram VantageTravel.com Antarctica 2012For more than 15 years, fortunate travelers have been introduced to the natural wonders of Antarctica by Vantage. Even so, 2012 stands apart. This year Vantage will not only feature the MS Fram, the best small ship cruising Antarctic waters, but it will be chartered exclusively for Vantage travelers. Ignacio "Nacho" Eiras, on of the Program Managers on this journey, shares a few impresions:

I have been going to Antarctica for the past seven years and I never get tired of it. As you start to approach the White Continent you will see icebergs floating, then gorgeous scenery. The first sight of land might be an island which gets everybody all excited...imagine going ashore and conquering the seventh continent! The scenery is difficult to describe - glaciers all over, beautiful valleys, a place so full of life and pristine, so peaceful and quiet that you will feel like you have been transported to another world.

Back to Holland & Belgium...to launch ms River Discovery II!

Wednesday, January 11, 2012
by Vantage Travel

As we start to prepare to head back to Holland and Belgium (this time to be a part of the launch of our newest European River Cruise ship - ms River Discovery II, a colleague reminded me to go back and look at my blogs from my last trip there, on the Waterways of Holland & Belgium - Tulips, Windmills and Canals.

That was a truly Memorable Journey for me - it was my first time to experience a Eurpopean River Cruise, and it was my first Vantage Deluxe Travel experience.  It was all quite amazing, but this particular update about Brugge, Belgium was my favorite (I loved watching this video again!):
-------------------------------------------------
March 2011

Update #3 - actually from day 4 of the trip. We visited the "medieval aboard the Holland & Belgium River Cruise with Vantage Deluxe Travel.

Brugge, Belgium was awesome to visit.  It's a medieval town that is still largely intact today.  This UNESCO World Heritage Site is beautiful to stroll around to see architecture.  Unbelievable canals that we boated around to see even more of the city.  We even came upon our four Vantage Program Managers enjoying the warmth of the day (and perhaps a Belgian beer!).

Here is the latest short video compilation with some of the day:

Next stop - Antwerp!

------------------------------------------------

ps - here are a couple comments posted after I did this blog:
Sunday, April 3, 2011 by Pat Hammarth:
I agree totally! Brugge is one of my favorite cities. I just got back last night from this very cruise. The lace is gorgeous and the cherry beer rather unusual:)I took so many photos!

Forgot to mention in our survey....thanks for the bottled water in our cabins and every day when we went out. That was a real plus.

Bringing You Closer to Belgium with Hot Chocolate!

Friday, December 23, 2011
by L. Nelson

We found this tasty recipe on David Lebovitz’s blog for Belgian hot chocolate or chocolat chaud (if you want to get French and fancy) and had to share! We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring you closer to a fabulous place like Belgium! =)

This hot chocolate recipe is from Wittamer, said to be one of the best chocolate shops in Brussels – Belgium’s spectacular capital.

Wittamer’s Belgian Hot Chocolate

Four to six servings

Adapted from The Great Book of Chocolate

1 quart (1l) half-and-half or whole milk

8 ounces (230g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped

4 ounces (115g) milk chocolate, finely chopped

tiny pinch of salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Warm about one-third of the half-and-half or milk, with the chopped chocolates and salt, stirring until the chocolate is melted.

2. Whisk in the remaining half-and-half or milk, heating until the mixture is warmed through. Add the cinnamon.

3. Use a hand-held blender, or a whisk, and mix the hot chocolate until it’s completely smooth. Serve very warm.

At Wittamer, it’s served with a poof of whipped cream and chocolate curls.

Want to try the real thing? Then hop aboard our journey, Holland & Belgium and the Floriade, and experience Belgium (and its chocolat chaud) for yourself!

Cultural Connections - Discover Israel: A Cultural Mosaic of Sacred Wonders

There may be no other place on earth with such a strong convergence of cultures and religions.  Exclusive to Vantage Deluxe Travel in 2012, this Israel journey is truly an experience of a lifetime.

Israel: A Cultural Mosaic of Sacred Wonders
Tel Aviv - Sea of Galilee - Dead Sea - Jerusalem Dome of the Rock Jerusalem Israel

Prepare to be enlightened as you discover the ancient land where the stories in the Bible originated. Israel is a destination filled with wonder and mystery, yet familiar to anyone who has even a passing interest in the history of religion. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all present in the fabric of daily life here — and with just 18-24 travelers — you’ll experience the mix of spiritual energy firsthand. Enjoy such excursions as a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee; a visit to the shores of the Dead Sea, known for its curative waters since the days of Herod the Great; and a tour of Jerusalem, a city holy to three religions. There’s so much here that honors tradition, yet renews hope for the future — from Tel Aviv’s emergence as a unique modern metropolis to must-see sites along Israel’s evolutionary road, where kings, emperors, traders, and prophets all helped shape its destiny. Join us for the most extensive historic and cultural journey to this ancient land — at the best small group value!

Cultural Connection: travelers will gain first hand insight into Israeli customs and have the opportunity to meet the local people!

What Sets This ISRAEL Journey Apart:
  • Guaranteed Small Groups - just 24 travelers
  • FREE Single Supplement on every departure
  • 43 Sightseeing Tours & Cultural Connections
  • Accommodations: 13 nights in Deluxe and Superior First-Class hotels, with 8 nights in water-view rooms.
  • A Vantage Program Manager: experienced and English-speaking accompanying all of the tour
  • Vantage 5% Travel Credit to use towards your next Vantage Memorable Journey - up to $500 per couple

ps: While I am a big fan of the memorable journeys offered by Vantage, I also work for the company (in case that wasn't obvious!).  But I invite anyone reading this to try Vantage, or if you have traveled with Vantage before - share you own experience on our blog.
